Colorado hunting base towns

Which Colorado town to base out of depends on which region you're hunting: Craig and Meeker anchor the northwest elk country, Gunnison and Durango anchor the southwest, and Salida and Buena Vista anchor the central Arkansas-valley units. Pick the town nearest your unit, not the other way around — driving two hours to camp defeats the purpose of a base town.

Northwest — Craig and Meeker

This is Colorado's best-known elk country, covering the Flat Tops and the units in the low double digits and 200s around the Yampa and White River drainages. Both towns are small, hunting-economy towns: expect gas, groceries, lodging, and hunting-supply stores geared toward the season, plus registered outfitters based locally. The outfitter directory's northwest region lists the guides we've verified operate out of this area.

Southwest — Gunnison, Durango, and Pagosa Springs

The southwest spans the Gunnison Basin and the San Juan Mountains — bigger, higher-elevation country than the northwest, with more limited/draw units mixed in among the OTC ones. Gunnison sits closer to the Gunnison Basin units (note that GMUs 54, 55, and 551 moved to limited-draw status for 2026 CPW · why 54/55/551 moved to limitedsee OTC tags — so confirm your unit's status before planning around this area). Durango and Pagosa Springs sit further south and serve the San Juan units. All three towns have a real outfitter presence — see the southwest region listings.

Central — Salida and Buena Vista

The upper Arkansas valley towns serve the central mountain units along the Front Range's western side. This corridor is closer to Denver and Colorado Springs than the western-slope towns, which makes it a shorter drive for Front Range residents, though the trade-off is generally more hunting pressure given the proximity. It's also the region where the outfitter directory currently has the fewest verified listings — worth checking the outfitter directory directly before assuming local guide availability.

What to expect from a base town

Most of these towns are small — built around ranching, outdoor recreation, and hunting season itself — not resort towns. Expect straightforward lodging (motels, cabins, some short-term rentals that book up early in-season), basic groceries and gas, and at least one wild-game processor in or near most of the towns above, though hours and pricing vary and you should call ahead during peak season rather than assume walk-in service. The DIY cost breakdown covers what processing typically runs.

Booking lodging

Base-town lodging fills up fast for the OTC rifle seasons especially — book weeks or months ahead if you want anything other than a tent. If you're hunting with an outfitter or a drop camp, lodging and sometimes processing arrangements are often handled as part of the package; guided hunt costs covers what's typically included.

Common questions

What is the best town to base an elk hunt out of in Colorado?

It depends entirely on your unit. Craig and Meeker serve the northwest elk country; Gunnison, Durango, and Pagosa Springs serve the southwest; Salida and Buena Vista serve the central Arkansas-valley units. Pick the town closest to your specific GMU rather than a town's reputation alone.

Do Colorado hunting towns have meat processors?

Most of the base towns listed here have at least one wild-game processor nearby, but hours, pricing, and capacity vary and get busy during peak rifle season. Call ahead rather than assuming walk-in service, especially opening week.

How far in advance should I book lodging in a Colorado hunting town?

Weeks to months ahead for the popular over-the-counter rifle seasons — lodging in small base towns is limited and fills up fast once hunters lock in their season. Camping is more flexible but still competes for space near popular trailheads.
